Manufacturers can no longer produce 150- to 500-watt MH fixtures with probe-start ballasts after Jan. 1.
MH probe-start fixtures can only be sold after Jan. 1 until inventories are gone.

New energy legislation regarding probe-start MH fixtures takes effect January 1, 2009. With the deadline just around the corner, make sure you’re up-to-speed on the latest information.

What does this new legislation mean to me?
The 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act prohibits lighting manufacturers from producing any new 150- to 500-watt MH fixtures using traditional probe start ballast, after January 1, 2009.

When will this Act take effect?
January 1, 2009 – however, you can order the prohibited products after Jan 1st providing manufacturers only sell finished goods they have in stock.

How will I get replacement parts?
Ruud Lighting will continue to provide warranted replacement ballasts and replacement lamps for probe-start fixtures. The new legislation states that manufacturers will no longer be able to manufacture complete fixtures.

What are the differences between probe-start and pulse-start?
Pulse-start MH lamps also provide a lower total cost of ownership. Manufacturers suggest that because pulse-start MH lamps are more efficient and feature longer life ratings, fewer fixtures and less frequent relamping are required, reducing energy consumption and operating costs.

Can I retrofit probe-start to pulse-start?
No, pulse-start fixtures use completely different ballasts that are not interchangeable. This is mostly due to the igniter that’s required with the pulse-start ballast. While the initial retrofit may require an initial up-front investment, customers will more than make up for it with increased energy savings over the life of the lamp.
